Anchr colleagues sharpen Java knowledge at Devoxx 2023

Anchr colleagues sharpen Java skills during Devoxx 2023
Anchr colleagues Steve Van der Vliet (Integration Engineer and Team Coach), Abdalla Al-Hamaideh (Java Developer) and Mattias Waem (Java Developer) attended Devoxx 2023, the largest Java event in Europe, on 4th October. Together with other Java developers from around the world, they explored the latest trends, best practices, and technologies in the Java world at Kinepolis in Antwerp.

Colleagues went to Devoxx

Devoxx, which took place this year from 2 to 6 October, is a conference that immerses attendees in all things Java. The programme consists of a mix of in-depth sessions on Java-related topics and other engaging talks and presentations on software architecture, testing, the use of AI in development projects, and the latest trends in the Java world.

Anchors at Devoxx 2023

Key take-aways

Better software testing with TDD

Matthias, who just started at Anchr, felt it was a must to be present: ‘I especially picked up tips and tricks to improve my programming and testing in Java’. The talks on security and AI assistants were also inspiring. Attending Devoxx was the ideal opportunity for me to gain more knowledge about programming in Java, as well as discovering new things that I can later integrate into our Anchr software. I have taken note of the Test Driven Development (TDD) methodology and will definitely apply it in future projects.’ Abdalla also agrees: ‘With TDD, you always write your test first, before you start writing your code. This ensures that you program with a clear goal based on what you want to achieve.’

Programming with AI

Abdalla found the talks about AI very interesting: ‘developing with AI is currently very relevant. I wanted to learn as much as possible about it. I also attended talks on new features in Java 21, Oauth2, and testing. Each one was very interesting’

Continuing to innovate in the Java world

Steve, the team coach of Abdalla and Mattias, didn't want to miss Devoxx. 'This year Devoxx was celebrating its 20th edition for a reason. Each year the conference lives up to its name and is full of inspiration and knowledge. We attended several talks on software architecture (Things I wish I knew before I started with event sourcing), on how we can test our software better and faster in the future, and how AI can be used during the development of a project. Finally, we also picked up the latest trends in Java.

We are already excited to apply our new knowledge in our daily operations," concludes Steve. "By regularly attending events or training sessions, we ensure that we keep up with the ever-changing technology and trends. With new insights, we can continue to excel in our field.
